Lloth:

Refer to "A Detailed History of the Drow"

Varunia:

Approximately 100 years before the First Age of Calenndor
"In this time, Balseraph had fully prepared his assault upon the land of Hć'eska. It was time to make use of these Dark Elves. Corrupted to unspeakable evil, Balseraph's army was yet still completely ignorant to his intentions, for they had their own in mind as they rose in rebellion against their fellow Elves. The event was an unforgettable cataclysm. Darkness and evil covered the lands by the lead of the deity called Lloth as legions of Dark Elves rose against their brothers and sisters in a wave of destruction which would utterly destroy the land of Hć'eska in the end..."

In this time, the Dark Elven forces were lead by one individual of particular power, even amongst the throes of loyal followers of Lloth. One called Maeglin Carnesîr. He had been the very first of the Dark Elves to fall into Lloth's deception, and was thus favored highly. The eldest and the strongest of them all, he was their unelected, undisputed leader. Maeglin, during these times, consorted directly with the dark goddess, enacting her will without question. He lead the armies of the Dark Elves into battle under Lloth's banner, rivalled only by one other. His own true love Eámanë.

Though Maeglin's skill in the dark arts were far beyond Eámanë's, it was she who gained favor more oft than not with their goddess, Lloth, who favored the females of their race beyond any others. In spite of his unerring loyalty to his goddess, Maeglin's utter contempt of this fact was ever-noticeable. Eámanë, even with Lloth's favor, was ever loyal to her love, Maeglin. His second in command and faithful bodyguard, as well.

"... They hunted the Elves down to the last, years later to the land of Westernesse to continue their crusade. Poised for combat, the dark ones attacked immediately. The battles fought were long and gruelling. The toils seemingly endless until at last the Dhaeraow fell. The Elves had conquered their enemy. All those who had risen against them, including their chosen leader, Lloth, were exiled. All banished to the Underdark forever, never to rise from the darkness again..."

What is clear and what is true from this point forward is truly unknown, as any concrete facts have never been found nor told. Scarcely more than lore, themselves...

It is said that during this great war in the realm of Westernesse that the mightiest of the Dark Elves, Maeglin Carnesîr, was destroyed in battle. No one knows for sure what truly happened to the first of their kind. Some reports said that he was frozen in time by a spell to prevent his death from a mortal injury. Other writings tell that he fled from battle once wounded, and hid within the caves of the Underdark where his brethen followed, though never found him.

After the disappearance of Maeglin, the defeat and banishment of the Dark Elves to the Underdark, the Dhaeraow were left leaderless and scattered. As deemed, Eámanë took up Maeglin's seat as the leader of the Dark Elves. With direction and favor from Lloth, Eámanë lead her people to a thriving existence within the caves of the Underdark, promoting the Spider Queen's ideals of female rule and superiority. All the meanwhile, however, within the deep places of her mind, Eámanë's faith for her love, Maeglin, steadily remained a strong thing. Not only her faith, but her hope that he would one day rise from the ashes of nothingness to lead the Drow once again.

Second Age of Calenndor, year 3592
Thousands upon thousands of years passed. Eámanë became a name no one knew, and she became known as Varunia, the drow. Just as Lloth had passed into legend, she too, was thought to have passed into tales and stories, as well. But she remained, the faithful.. and deceptive right hand of Lloth. The time came when the Queen of Evil deemed Varunia worthy of such a mantle equal to her own, to be her very successor. Imbuing her with an irreversible power through dark ritual, Varunia, too, became known amongst the Drow as an all powerful deity and goddess.

Then came her time. The time came for Varunia to show her true self, and where her loyalties still, even millennia later, remained. Once she herself had achieved the mantle of godhood, she turned on Lloth and struck out against her with outrageous and forbidden teachings. Her faith and what could ever be construed as a form of love still belonged to her lost love, the first Dark Elf, Maeglin Carnesîr, whom she would follow over the rule of Lloth at any time. Believing in her mind that males were equal to females, and that society should be as such. She gathered a large following very quickly over a short number of years. Dissatisfied and disgruntled males, and even a marginally unexpected number of females, as well.

The Underdark became a literal warzone, civil war breaking out between opposing factions in the name of their goddesses and beliefs. After nearly two centuries of civil war, both silent and direct, the fighting came to a stop, and all that remained of the two factions split. Those that served Lloth were still too many to be conquered, and drove all Varunites from their caves, decreeing them to be heretics and fools. Under the lead of their goddess, the small following that they were now, took up residence in two cities, ancient and abandoned since the days when the Drow first struck out against the Elves after thousands of years of hiding.

The cities were named Ooltul and Xun'Qoroth, and were transformed into dwellings of the night. Over the hundreds of gruelling years alone, isolated in the surface world, these Drow came to eventually adapt to it once again, as they had once adapted to the environment of the Underdark. There, these surface Drow have lived and thrived for many thousands of years, under the watchful eye of their patron goddess, Varunia, long since now a mortal enemy of the Spider Queen, Lloth.

Second Age of Calenndor, year 4671
"The first of an increasing number of large "Drow Cities" are discovered by outsiders aboveground. Drow which seem to live naturally within the day's light have taken up residence within ancient, abandoned Elven cities in the West. Appearing to have lived there for many hundreds of years. Their ways aren't far differentiated from those Drow of the Underdark, however they don't worship Lloth. Instead, the chosen deity of these Dark Elves is another Drow goddess called Varunia. While still harsh, these Drow seem to follow their own code of debased ethics."
