Ansteorra - Seals
Written by Ayshetral
What are Seals?
They are instruments of nature and elemental power that allow for one without magic to conjure up something similar to magical abilities. They are essentially a median between an individual and the outside environment. They are indirect sources of magic.
How do they work?
Seals are indirect forms of magical tools. They draw up various energies or natural events into the 'Catalyst Chamber', a term coined by the more modern Sealmasters. This Chamber basically takes control of the natural forces and directs them to another location, or enhances/decreases their abilities. Essentially, one channels the natural forces or exterior objects through the Seal.
What do Seals look like?
In external form, they resemble three-dimensional diamonds, just more conic and such. <==> is the sideways shape. But once they have been 'aligned' with a user, they create a tattoo-like symbol on the right or left paw, depending on which paw they have decided to put it into. Sealmasters can generally use two different Seals at a time.
Aligned?
Yes. It means you are now using the properties of a Seal.
What kind of Different Seals are there?
There are six primary Seals that are found on the world of Furcadia.
-Fire-element. (Blaze & Infyrno)
-Liquid-element. (Ripple & Current)
-Earth-element.(Ground & Earth)
-Atmosphere-element. (Breeze & Gale)
-Light-element. (Bright)
-Dark-element. (Night)
For the first four elements, there are two different Seals to be used. The first one is called a submissive Seal, the other is a dominant. The last two elements are the same.
Okay, so in Ansteorra, explain how these work.
To start using a Seal, you must enter the Seal Acolyte class. From there, you must select a Seal to learn that element. Six to choose from. There are 12 levels before you master that element, and can move onto another. While you are learning from the current element, every so many levels, you gain a new sense of manipulation for your element.
Manipulation?
There is something called the 2-2-2 system. Every 2 levels, you become closer towards mastering your skill of the element you are carrying. The Sealmaster you are training with will inform you OOCly/ICly of your new skills. There are three types of skills you can learn. Attack, Defense, and Assist. Depending on the Seal, you might become skilled at assist magic first. Here is a hypothetical chart of the 2-2-2 system with the Wind Seal.
---Breeze Seal---
Level 2 - Gain slight assist - defense skill.
Level 4 - Gain slight healing - light skill.
Level 6 - Gain stronger assist - extra-shielding skill.
Level 8 - Gain slight attack - wind shearing/projectile skill.
---Switch to Gale Seal---
Level 10 - Gain stronger healing - heavy skill.
Level 12 - Gain powerful assist - purification skill. Mastered Wind Element.
Notice that there was 3 assist, 2 healing and 1 attack instead of 2, 2, 2. Certain Seals have more of one thing than another. For the Fire Element Seal, it's 3 attack, 2 assist, 1 healing. Earth and Water have their own counts as well. There is a list.
What are these skills exactly?
Seals take their powers from the outside radius, right? So, an assisting defense skill from wind might be using it to blow away an incoming projectile, provided it was moving slowly and was rather small. Or could be to deflect some fire by rerouting the wind currents into the Catalyst Chamber and blowing it back. It's really just a matter of manipulating your element. A Fire Element user could set something on fire, or a Water Element user could pull water from a nearby lake and block an incoming attack with a wave from the Seal.
Therefore, we can assume that Seals derive power and can be channeled into energy for Seal users to help with.
In battle, how would this help?
The BCR, which is how 'effective' the magic is, is decided by the DM. Sealmasters will train the adepts to use Seals in battle, from defending themselves to healing allies or attacking foes. The adepts themselves will need to use their creativity to indirectly attack their opponents based on the basics that the Sealmaster taught them, and hence whether or not it works is up to the DM and the BCR rating.
When it is successful, as said in the skills portion, the spell would either assist the user, assist another player, defend an attack in the next round, or assault an opponent, depending on whether or not the roll is successful. If it is, a player could be rejuvenated with healing abilities, or an enemy could suddenly be hit by a brick, some sharp nails, or maybe a blast of fire or jet of water. It all depends on three things:
A Fire Element user would not be able to perform an amazing fire spell in a snowy range, as only their body heat could suffice (although a high-level Fire Element user might be able to spontaneously combust a creature, or make them very, very hot.) A Water Element user would be in quite a gyp in a desert location against a dry creature.
What happens when I master a Seal type?
---note: You can only study one element at a time, not choose to do Fire for three, then Earth.---
You move on. You gain another 12 levels in a different Seal level. You could study Fire, master it, then go onto Water. Or another. Mix and match. Though Bright and Night cannot be both studied by the same individual. Bright is made for the just, Night is made for the withdrawn.
When you have achieved level 24, or mastered two Elements, your path splits. You can either start to learn a third Element at a double-rate, or begin your study as a Sealmaster. From there, you go up to level 25. Once you have reached that and are studying to be a Sealmaster (otherwise, you just keep going without this), you gain the usage of a one-of-a-kind Archaic Seal.
Archaic Seal?
They have extremely rare qualities that make them stand out. Ayshetral has the Temporal Seal, which manipulates time. There are others that allow one to phase in and out of reality completely, called the Shadow Seal, another that summons all sorts of creatures, called the Forced Call Seal. Various others exist. But there are only ONE of each. Once a Seal Acolyte has become a Sealmaster, they may begin studying feats that involve their personal Archaic Seal, and become the Sealmaster of ______. (i.e. Ayshetral is the Sealmaster of Time.)
And if I don't choose to be a Sealmaster?
You lose a chance of having a feat until level 36, where you can perform a tri-elemental skill designated by a Sealmaster. It's very rare for one to study three, four or five elements. Though few actually have. One skill those have who choose not to become Sealmasters is that at level 28, they are granted the ability to weild two Seals simultaneously. Sealmasters cannot do that until level 32. This benefits one greatly in case there are two different types of opponents.
What do I need to be able to do to become a Seal Acolyte?
Merely have some creativity and a willingness to learn. Each level gained will also require a bit of tutelage from a Sealmaster. Some Seal adepts will be allowed to teach lower-level adepts as well. It requires a bit of creativity to do this, but the Sealmaster will teach the basics of each level to those who wish to undergo Seal training.
You will also be able to fight with a weapon of your choice. Seals were originally designed for people who did not have magic to begin with, but could use it now as a second option.
