The Kingdom of Ansteorra is a large tract of land in the center of the Freelands on the continent of Calenndor. Dominated by the Crescent Sea, the central Kingdom of the Freelands is also one of the oldest, having been founded at the end of the War of the Lich King in the mid-Third Age. Sometimes known as the Jewel of Calenndor, the fate of the Kingdom of Ansteorra has been inorexiably intertwined with that of the rest of the Freelands.

History

Main article: History of Ansteorra

The modern Kingdom of Ansteorra was founded in the aftermath of the War of the Lich King by the then-ruler of the city of Ansteorra, Garwin Bringhamton, who was one of the few nobles left alive after the war, and a hero in his own right. In year 2245 of the Third Age, Garwin was crowned Goridan I, claiming descent from the legendary founder of Ansteorra, Goridona. As the new king, he named his family the House of Goridona, and for five generations his descendants remained in control of the Kingdom of Ansteorra.

Ansteorra remained the dominant power in the Freelands for nearly two centuries. At it's greatest extent, the lands allied to the House of Goridona stretched from the Himoan Shield to the City of Towers to Mont Ciest. In TA 2430, Goridona II was deposed in a castle-wide coup by his chief advisor, who crowned himself Zebulon I, beginning a campaign to retake lands lost by Ansteorra over the preceding few decades. The House of Montangent was overthrown in TA 2550, leading to a dissolution of the country. The House of Goridona returned to power later that year, ruling over a nation barely bigger than the capital.

Over the next centuries, Ansteorra fulfulled a role as a neutral ground for the major nations of the Freelands, and was host to the first attempt of a international court system. Its neutrality in the affairs of the Freelands contributed directly to the survival of the nation, and by the 3200's Ansteorra had treaties of annexation and protection with eleven smaller nations near the Crescent Sea. These nations expanded Ansteorra's influence in the Freelands, as well as its borders. By the founding of the Kingdom of Austia in TA 3381, Ansteorra had situated itself as one of the major nations of the Freelands.

In the last millennium of the Third Age, Ansteorra saw much political turmoil. The ruling house was overthrown five times, each revolution ending poorly as revolutionary ideals fell next to dreams of power. At the end of TA 4370, Goridona VI became King, suceeding his father who had died under mysterious circumstances. Goridona VI's rule was marred by the Rune War, and his own personal vanity. He abdicated his throne to his wife in 4A 4. The Queen's rule was similarly weak. Without any support from the nobles and rogue elements of the military, her rule led Ansteorra directly into disaster during the Liberation War. In the aftermath, the absolute monarchy of Ansteorra was reduced to merely a constitutional figurehead.

Government and Politics

The original House of Goridona, founded by Goridan I is long dead; however, subsequent ruling houses of the Kingdom have traditionally taken the name Goridona for themselves with a few notable exceptions. Currently the House of Goridona Plantagenet rules the nation, and has been in power since TA 4212 when Crown Princess Beatrix II reclaimed the nation from the fifth interregnum. Since the return of the monarchy following the Liberation War, the government of the Kingdom has been in the process of restructuring itself from an Autocratic rule to a Constitutional Monarchy.

The government of Ansteorra consists of a bicameral parliament, one House of Nobles and one House of Commons. The parliament is charged with creating laws, declaring war and The head of government is vested in the office of the Prime Minister, who must be selected from the House of Commons. The Prime Minister appoints their own cabinet, typically from within the parliament itself. The reigning Monarch's powers are limited to executive orders, which can be overruled by a parliament quorum. There is no party system in either house, every member of the House of Commons must stand on their own to be elected. The House of Nobles is populated solely by hereditary peers.

Ansteorra has always had an independent judiciary branch of government. The Magistrates interpret the law and can overturn laws enacted by parliament. However, their decisions can be overruled by the order of the Queen.

Law Enforcement

The law enforcement of the Kingdom is handled by two seperate agencies, known officially as the Day Guard and the Night Watch. However, any citizen of the Kingdom will only known them as the 'Ansteorran Guard'.

Day Guard

Despite its name, the Day Guard patrols at all hours. They serve the Kingdom as a police force. The Day Guard is well-trained, heavily armed and sometimes known for a bit of overzealous brutality in the enforcement of the law. One of the major features of the Guard is a well-deserved reputation for being incorrputible, as among the Day Guard bribery and corruption is punished harshly.

The Day Guard is headquartered in the capital city of Ansteorra, and led by Lord Commander Godric Ti'Vannis, who is also the head of the Ansteorran military. Each of the thirteen Counties is assigned one Commander, who is in charge of three sub-commanders, who each have one company of guards, consisting of 50 guards. Guards patrol in groups of four, three guards and one sergeant. The Day Guard are all members of the Ansteorran Army and form a fast response force to threats.

Night Watch

The Night Watch are a network of professional footpads, investigators, informants, spies and n'er-do-wells that have royal sanction for their work. The Night Watch deals with information, and it is rumoured that every business operation, legitimate or illegitimate, in the Freelands is watched by this group. The Night Watch reports only to the Prime Minister and the Queen, though political machinations in the new Parliament have been working toward undermining this with little success.

The night watch is led by the Chief Inspector, who is aided by three Inspectors, and are thence broken down into a panopoly of insanely complicated ranks, sub-ranks and non-ranks that are impenetrably complex. The Night Watch prefers it this way, as it makes mapping the hierarchy of the group impossible.

Geography

Ansteorra, in the center of the Freelands, is a land of rolling hills dotted by dense forested areas. The nation is bordered on the south by the Kebeyen Republic, the east by the Holy Launcian Empire, and to the north by the Duchy of Xanthia and Valanthas. The largest geographical feature of Ansteorra is the massive Crescent Sea, which forms a natural border on the northeast of the nation. The capital city, Ansteorra City was built atop a natural plateau which slopes up toward the shore of the sea and ends with a sheer cliff before the waves. Near the southern edges of the Crescent Sea, low marshy areas known as the Fens are found, though much of this region has been drained for agricultural purposes.

Political Geography

The Kingdom is divided into twelve Counties, each ruled by a hereditary ruler, who is automatically a member of the House of Lords. The city of Ansteorra itself is considered equal to a County in terms of its political clout. Various hereditary baronies and viscounties comprise the minority of the land within each of the twelve counties of the Kingdom, although because of the Liberation War many of the old families are not nearly as rich as their nobility would imply. Since the war, most of the old noble-owned lands were sold to finance upkeep of the manor houses or castles, and a new middle class has appeared.
