CS:Example Combat

From Anstepedia

Order of Combat

  1. Roll Initiative
  2. Posting Order
  3. Attack/Defend, Crit, Damage Rolls.
  4. Loot

Roll Initiative

Every player taking part in the battle rolls Initiative. Higher rolls mean that your turn comes sooner. When init is called, it is your job to roll your dice and immediately be quiet. It is very hard for a DM to get the order correct if people talk through init.

Posting Order

The DM will then post the order of each player's turn using an emit. Between turns, the DM will repost the order, and remind players when their turn is up.

Attack/Defend, Crit, Damage Rolls.

The player whose turn it is has a choice to either attack, or cast a spell (if availible).

After the encounter is over, the monsters or enemies may leave treasure behind. The DM will dole this out as they see fit to.

Example Combat

Sound easy? It is! Below is an actual combat example, annotated for your convenience. Inside boxes you'll find things actually posted in the Furcadia (http://www.furcadia.com) window.

[#] Init!
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d10+7 & gets 17.
[*] Purin Te'Reel rolls 1d10+2 & gets 6.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d10+1 & gets 6.
[*] Lady Falcon rolls 1d10+3 & gets 9.

After the Init emit, everyone rolls their initiative. The DM then posts the list:

[#] Sirum, Lady Falcon, Purin, Albrecht

And posts the first player's turn:

[#] Sirum!

Sirum now can take his turn:

Sirum Hest crouches slightly and reaches for his bow at first chance, acting hastily less he give
his opponents the chance to injure him. He glances down and sees all the muddy snow on the arena's
floor, having gotten an idea. As he brings out an arrow to set onto his bow he kicks up a pile of
the mud towards Albrecht's eyes, smirking and immediatly afterwards drawing back the bowstring,
taking aim for his chest and letting the arrow fly hopefully with precision. Afterwards, he would
then go for another arrow and shoot it off at Albrecht's left leg, and if possible then his right.
[Sneak vs Albrecht]

Ooh, a sneak attack. Rogues, Bards and Rangers get these. You have to roll 1d20+<Dex Mod> to sneak, and the opponent rolls 1d20+<Wis Mod> to notice.

[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d20+10 & gets 20.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d20-1 And is snuck! & gets 18.

Albrecht isn't a very wise Paladin, so he gets snuck up on with a quick attack. A sneak attack gives you one added attack on the turn, so Sirum rolls To Hit three times:

[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+8 & gets 18.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+8 & gets 22.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+8 & gets 13.

Albrecht has an AC of 22, though, so only the second one hit. He tells Sirum that only one hit:

Albrecht Steinnemann: [#2 hit]

Now, Sirum has to roll Severity. Severity is a very important roll, because it tells you how well you hit your opponent. Severity is decided by a roll of 1d100:

  • A roll of 1 does the damage to the person who attacked. (Botch!)
  • A roll of 2-20 does half damage (rounded down) (Glance!)
  • A roll of 21-89 does normal damage
  • A roll of 90-99 does double damage (Critical!)
  • A roll of 100 does 10 times normal damage (Deathblow!)
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d100 & gets 10.

Yuck! A Glance. Half damage, so Sirum notes that with a /2 after the roll. Furc can't do math, so you have to do the math yourself, and tell the other player.

[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d10+6 /2 & gets 11.
Sirum Hest: [5]
Albrecht Steinnemann is only hit with a glance, but it hurts!

Sometimes it can be appropriate to post a short response post if you've been hit, but it's not required. Now it's Lady Falcon's turn.

[#] Lady Falcon!
Lady Falcon blinks then starts to mumble quietly to herself as she watches her opponents, her wings
folding out of the way along her back though she doesn't expect to need them, eyes flicking between
each opponent as she chants quietly to herself [1/2]

She spends her entire turn prepping a spell. Since she marked the spell as [1/2], it means that it will be cast on her next turn. Now it's Purin's turn.

[#] Purin!
Purin Te'Reel begins to slowly chant under her breath, a blue glow starting to take shape on the
tip of her staff. She eyes the other fighters, unsure of who to attack first, or to attack at all.
The air around her becomes chilled as she continues to chant, the blue glow growing in size with
each second that goes by. After a few moments of this, she eyes the mouse and points her staff at
him, ice shards flinging in his direction. [1/1]

For Mages it's the same attack sequence for everyone else when you're using a Powered Evocation spell. You roll 1d30+CR to hit, and if you do hit, then roll Severity and damage!

[*] Purin Te'Reel rolls 1d30+8 & gets 21.
Sirum Hest: [Hit]
[*] Purin Te'Reel rolls 1d100 & gets 70.
[*] Purin Te'Reel rolls 1d5+8 & gets 10.

Now it's Albrecht's turn. He's a 10th level Paladin with a two handed sword, and is easily strong enough to pound poor Purin into the ground in one turn.

[#] Albrecht!
Albrecht Steinnemann raises his mighty blade, which had earned the moniker Gottdammerung, and
slashes at his foe, the white hot light of the primes pressing his attack as the heavy Zewihander
hits Purin hopefully, it's keen edge ready to do some significant damage to the mage. "Du ben der
Ubel! Ich schmitzen sie Shiller! Gottdammerung!"
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (1) & gets 21.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (2) & gets 31.
Purin Te'Reel: [2]
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 2d100: (12) (91) = 103.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 2d6+9 /2 (1) & gets 15.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 2d6+9 *2 (2) & gets 20.
Albrecht Steinnemann: [47 damage]

Purin Te'Reel is hit quite hard, falling to her knees from the blow and then falling face first onto the ground, knocked out.

Normally, This much damage would put Purin into the dying state, as she'd be well below -10 hit points. However, this being a spar, death is not possible.

[#] Sirum!
Sirum Hest winces as the ice shards fly into him, able to put them out of his mind. He cries out,
"Hey! Attack the other mage not me!", preferring a fair fight and deciding to attack her next.
Though, as Albrecht just rendered her unable to fight, he hops up on the fencepost behind him to
get a better aim at the paladin head, drawing out an arrow as he goes and knocking it into his
bow, firing first at his left shoulder and then getting another arrow to send towards his left arm.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+8 & gets 9.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+8 & gets 15.
Albrecht Steinnemann: [0]
Albrecht Steinnemann dodges the attack gracefully!
Sirum Hest murmurs something about snow messing up his aim as the arrows miss Albrecht entirely.
[#] Lady Falcon!
Lady Falcon continues to chant, knowing Sirum and liking him even if he does tend to get himself
in trouble she decides to try and help him, flinging her paw towards Albrecht as she aims a
disarming spell at him [2/2]

Ah, Lady Falcon casts a disarming spell. In this kind of spell, she has to roll 1d30+CR to beat Albrecht's roll of 1d30+Strength Modifier.

[*] Lady Falcon rolls 1d30+1 & gets 12.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+5 to hold onto his weapon & gets 27.
Albrecht Steinnemann maintains control of Gottdammerung for the time being!
Lady Falcon sighs as her spell fails

And luckily for Albrecht, but unluckily for Lady Falcon, he was able to hold on!

[#] Albrecht!
Albrecht Steinnemann's momentum carries his blade toward the winged femme as his gutteral Launcian
cries shout out. She tried to disarm him! A Paladin of Heiliger Iocus! "Ubeluberubel! Joo schall
be schmitzen auf meiner blade!" He screams as the blade hopefully severs her in twain!
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (1) & gets 19.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (2) & gets 10.
Lady Falcon: [1]
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d100 for severity of his blow! & gets 87.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 2d6+9 damage & gets 15.
Lady Falcon slumps to the mud covered ground, out cold
[#] Sirum, Albrecht

As characters slip into unconsciousness, they are removed from the init list. When there are only two players, init names are not usually called out, and the fight becomes much more reactive in terms of posting.

[#] Sirum!
Sirum Hest erfs as he realizes that he's the only one left for the paladin to send falling down
into the mud. He hops down off of the fencepost, dropping his bow onto the ground beside him and
reaches behind him, grabbing ahold of Perennial and unsheathing it, holding it in front of him
amaturely, though defensivly, "U-um... dont suppose ya will go easy on me, Albrecht?" [-2 attacks]

What did Sirum just do? He changed his weapon. When you draw a new weapon, you lose an attack, but Sirum changed from a bow to a blade, and lost two attacks this round.

[#] Albrecht!
Albrecht Steinnemann has already rendered the two mages unconscious, and turns his attention to
the mouse with the little blade. "Joo! Joo vill ben schmitzen on zum blade ov Heiliger Iocus.
Gottdammerung!" He calls to his blade, which flies through the air to smash the young rogue into
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (1) & gets 15.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (2) & gets 14.
Albrecht Steinnemann's blade is not fast enough, apparently.

Usually, when the To Hit rolls are 15 or less, you can assume that they missed!

[#] Sirum!
Sirum Hest easily moves out of the way of the huge blade, laughing quietly and murmuring, "Wonder
if I've gotten any better with this...". As soon as the words leave his mouth, he scurries forward,
nearly stumbling from running with his katana out but managing to get his balance. He swings his
katana at Albrecht's chest randomly and with poor aim, not caring if he manages to wound the
Paladin, just wanting to do something other than wait to get knocked out.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+3 & gets 25.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+3 & gets 10.
Albrecht Steinnemann: [1]
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d100 & gets 98.

A critical hit! Sirum puts a *2 next to the roll to tell everyone that roll did double damage!

[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d10+1 *2 & gets 11.
Sirum Hest: [22]
[#] Alb!
Albrecht Steinnemann is stabbed quite violently! He roars, and reacts swiftly to correct his
failings with his previously overconfident attack. With a word of prayer, he stabs at Sirum,
and lifts up his zweihander to cut him twice, hopefully.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (1) & gets 24.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (2) & gets 26.
Sirum Hest: [1]
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d100 & gets 68.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 2d6+9 damage! & gets 17.

[#] Sirum!
Sirum Hest cries out with pain as the blade leaves a deep gash in him, muttering something about
angry holy warrior as he falls to his knees, though he doesnt stop, determined to leave his
opponent badly injured before he gets chopped up. He slowly raises his katana up to his right,
then jerks it left, intending on leaving a wound on both of Albrecht's legs.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+3 & gets 33.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+3 & gets 33.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 2d100: (100) (1) = 101.

In an odd twist (and an Ansteorra first, no lie ^^) Sirum achieves a Deathblow (*10 damage) and a Botch (Damage yourself) in the same attack. You'll note that Sirum uses the ROLL command for multiple severity rolls. 'ROLL' prints out the dice numbers individually, 'roll' does not.

[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d10+1 *10 & gets 10.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d10+1 BOTCH & gets 11.
Albrecht Steinnemann notes that Sirum's aim is terrible, he isn't hit in the legs, but instead
is slashed in the groin apparently, as Sirum's other stroke hits himself.
Sirum Hest erfs as he accidently manages to stab himself with Perennial.
Albrecht Steinnemann winces in a falsetto as he takes aim and strikes Sirum again, though he is
weakened, he is not out!
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (1) & gets 25.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (2) & gets 27.
Sirum Hest: [2]
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d100: (97) = 97.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d100 & gets 62.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 2d6+9 *2 & gets 15.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 2d6+9 & gets 19.
Albrecht Steinnemann: [49 damage]
[#] Sirum!
Sirum Hest begins to pant for a few moments as he slowly rises, appearing barely able to stay
conscious, the Paladin easily ripping him apart with that sword. He mutters, "One more of those
an'... im out... whew...", weakly raising up the katana to Albrecht's stomach and shoving forward,
intending on running him through in one last effort to win.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+3 & gets 28.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+3 & gets 25.
Albrecht Steinnemann: [2]
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 2d100: (85) (85) = 170.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d10+1 & gets 6.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d10+1 & gets 2.
[#] Albrecht!
Albrecht Steinnemann is looking terrible, and grips his sword tightly, gazing fiercely into Sirum's
face, he steels his nerves with a short prayer to the Primes and attacks with the fury of a thousand
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (1) & gets 19.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (2) & gets 34.
Sirum Hest: [1]
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d100 severity & gets 14.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 2d6+9 /2 damage, noting that the fury of a thousnad paladins isn't
much fury at all & gets 16.
Albrecht Steinnemann: [8]
[#] Sirum!
Sirum Hest feels like that hit came with the force of a thousand Paladins and looks like he's been
hit with the entire Ansteorran army now. He collapses back onto the ground, not able to stand now
even if he wanted to. In his last moments of conciousness, because in a few seconds Albrecht will
likely send him flying back against the fenceposts, he shoves the katana's tip right at the paladins
right knee, then tries to jerk down, praying he falls. Hopefully not on him.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+3 & gets 32.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+3 & gets 15.
Albrecht Steinnemann: [1]
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d100 & gets 54.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d10+1 & gets 9.
[#] Albrecht!
Albrecht Steinnemann is barely clinging to consciousness at this point, but does not fall any farther
than his knees. With a mighty heave he drops the tip of his blade at Sirum's chest to end this
battle, with any luck.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (1) & gets 23.
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 (2) & gets 23.
Sirum Hest: [0]
Albrecht Steinnemann's half-unconscious state cause him to miss! Nooo!
Sirum Hest just barely manages to crawl out of the way of the sword, glancing up to the sky and
wondering if M'Rill or some other Prime is deciding to help him. But he doesnt think on that too
long, wanting just to keep weakly jabbing Perennial's tip towards Albrecht's legs, wincing as he does
so as it hurts even move at this point.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+3 & gets 23.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d30+3 & gets 25.
Albrecht Steinnemann: [2 ><]
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 2d100: (27) (57) = 84.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d10+1 & gets 6.
[*] Sirum Hest rolls 1d10+1 & gets 7.
Albrecht Steinnemann teeters and falls over, his muscled, yet unconscious form landing squarely on
[*] Albrecht Steinnemann rolls 1d30+9 to hit Sirum :P & gets 21.
Albrecht Steinnemann misses :~(

Sirum Hest is saved from becoming a squished mouseh. ^^
Sirum Wins!

And now comes the Loot phase. As this was just a spar, the players only get a few Experience Points.

[#] +5 XP to all. No loot

That's all Folks! Once you have a good handle on the basic flow of combat, you're set. It takes practice to remember how every possible tactic and spell works, but in general you only have to worry about To Hit, Severity and Damage.
